ANGELA HARPER’S STORY
Digital Marketing Specialist, Businesswoman, Actress, Writer
"On October 1, 2004, I won the Miss Black and Gold pageant at UNC-Greensboro. My pageant platform was to raise awareness about missing and endangered children, but perhaps I was too ahead of my time and my college peers didn't seem to care. I couldn't generate any interest in my ideas. The pageant coordinator suggested I switch to something else. I had met Cynthia and she introduced me to Lisa Thomas. We started doing a few small gatherings on campus with students discussing topics of their interest. That fizzled after a little while, but my connection with Lisa and Cynthia did not. Somehow, in the blink of an eye, I started working with The P3 Group.
I attended events, helped with the website, and helped manage the newsletter.
Two things impacted me tremendously: Lisa's talk about The Committee Members - which is a transformative distinction in some of the P3 courses – and a woman at a P3 event who had quit her career. I was and still am a firecracker who marches to the beat of her own drum. Understanding The Committee Members helped me grasp code-switching beyond dialect changes and mindset beyond just a motivational quote to get me pumped up. And the woman who came to the event and talked about how she had been miserable for years and finally realized her job was the cause, was like a subtle wink from the universe that said,
"Angela, you're not wrong to want a career that makes you happy AND can make you some money."
Lisa was instrumental in helping me see that my ideas and goals weren't pipe dreams. I could achieve them, but I needed a solid foundation. She was the first Black woman full-time entrepreneur that I had ever met. Plus, she drove a Jaguar so that added on more cool points.
I actually did my first interview when we started The P3 Jewels to complement The P3 Pearls. I interviewed singer/songwriter Liz Herrera. I helped to put together the digital covers and update the website. I even got to call Iyanla Vanzant's office to tell her thank you for her being a P3 Pearl and for being a guest on The P3 Powerboost Podcast.
I could go on and on, but just know that the reason I'm a digital marketer who rarely outsources anything is because of my time with The P3 Group. The reason I was in the top 3 out of 300 people for a job as a digital marketing specialist is because of The P3 Group. The reason I landed a job at a travel agency as a digital marketing specialist is because of The P3 Group. And the reason I'm also an actress and writer who understands the benefit of learning the business side of the creative world is because of The P3 Group.
Lisa truly made a successful businesswoman out of me.”
