How to Create Sacred Space

Altars have always played an important role in my life. Growing up in a Catholic family, our church was a towering building of silence and strange aromas - burning candles, incense and the coldness of wooden pews, marble statues and muted light. Holy Angels Church in Buffalo, New York has 5 altars - the huge main altar and two side altars to the left and to the right. To a child, these pillars of stone, marble, and rich tapestry were awesome and somewhat intimidating.
My personal altar, however, is welcoming, warm and inviting. I often linger at my altar and pick up a treasured book, a dried flower from a memorable event, or to choose a Journey Card for inspiration for the day.
I have written words of power and glory on little pieces of paper - attributes which I intend to attract to myself ~ courage, fortitude, faith. Reading these words each day pulls them into my heart where I nurture them and give gratitude for their presence.
CAN YOU CREATE SACRED SPACE IN YOUR HOME? Of course, you can! It’s all a matter of your willingness to create an outward sign of your inward desires. Here’s a few of MY suggestions:
Find a quiet space in which to create your altar - the corner of your bedroom, a little nook hidden away from the rest of your home.
Bring together those items which feed your spirit - special books, cards and letters from loved ones, candles, statues.
Write your prayers, intentions, and affirmations on pieces of beautiful paper. Fold them into the pages of your favorite books.
Create the habit of lighting your candles at a certain time each day. Rituals - they feed us - they provide continuity and security - they re-focus us and lift us up into our spirituality.
Love yourself enough to visit your sacred space on a regular basis. You will find that even as you pass by it during the day, the spiritual energy of the sacred momentous, treasured items and written prayers and poems will fill your soul.
